A modern original portrait, a "Black Queen" expresses a quiet nobility even as she remains partially unclothed. Inspired by paintings of slavery and the early African diaspora in the colonial Americas, this acrylic painting by Afro-Caribbean artist JaeMe Bereal speaks to life's unspoken trials and resilience. Her regal aura also belies a vulnerability. She keeps a straight back, an enforced tallness. Her skin a  kaleidoscope of swirling blues, purples, greens and reds. She is Queen of Queens. Acrylic on canvas, this is one of JaeMe's seminal portraits that she has only recently been ready to part with, ready to find it a special home.

It is beautifully rendered with a soft, reflective quality and an earthy, natural palette. Created on masonite (wood), the painting came about from a series of illustrations on the Black diaspora at the culmination of the Civil War. JaeMe Bereal's depiction of the final days of slavery is poignant, one that takes into account not celebration, but a sense of resignation and the trepidation of what lies ahead.

This sculpting piece is a combination of metal and metal filler. You don't need to search farther than your TV to learn how African women cherish their hair as their glory. This care of hair is as biblical as it is traditional and African women have seen hair as an additional accessory to make an artistic statement without saying a word. This sculpture captures the ancient art of hair weaving by an elder meticulously braiding the hair of the younger; the younger patiently submits, knowing she would soon be wearing a crowing glory.
