Iconic Diaspora
"African Queen" is part of JaeMe Bereal's portrait series that is 7 years in the making entitled 'Iconic Diaspora.' What started out as a fascination for capturing faces, which through JaeMe's eyes are multi-colored, knobby landscapes of experience and emotion, later evolved into a larger body of work that blended politics and events from years gone by that are never really gone from us. Much of Iconic Diaspora is focused on Black and Brown people. Aware that role models are in short supply in her cultural world, JaeMe reached out with her work to cross boundaries, both race and societal, in order to give back a sense of power to those who feel marginalized or short-changed. JaeMe is based in Oakland, CA.
